Death of Richard F. Westberry, (1913, Jesup, Georgia)
Saturday, the 30th last, 2:30 PM, the Death Angel came in our midst and bore the Spirit of our young friend, Richard F. Westberry, back to the God who gave it.
Our hearts are bowed with sorrow. Tears mingle with those of our friends in this calamity, for we cannot understand why one who was in the bloom of manhood should be taken away, but we know that our Heavenly Father is too wise to err and that for some grand purpose he saw fit to take Richard from his earthly home to the home prepared for him on High.
The deceased has been a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church for several years. He was about 28 years of age and a young man of good qualities and well liked by all who knew him and will be greatly missed by his friends and associates, but we feel that his death was for some good purpose that we cannot now see.
We realize that our days on earth are numbered and that we all should live so that when the summons on high shall come, we should be ready to meet our friends and loved ones there.
Richard was the third of six brothers, five of whom survive. They are W. K., M. H., J. C., C. D., and Harry Westberry of Gardi.
Three sisters, Mrs. Eben Kicklighter of Jesup, Mrs. J. A. Richardson of Winter Haven, Florida and Mary Westberry of Gardi. Also his aged father who has the symphany of the entire community. We trust that the Mercies of Heaven may rest upon them and that they may realize that their loss is his gain. They have the sweet realization that their loved one is at piece.
The poor worn frame will never more be racked with agonies of pain-suffering is at an end. He has heard the words from the Father's lips, "Well done, thou good and Faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of thy Lord.
It will only be a little while until they cross the dark river and join their loved one among the hosts of the saved on the other shore."

Second Death As Result of Fight In Jail. B. S. Westbury Dies Result of Attempted Escape at Miami Prison. Miami, Sept. 28. – B. S. Westbury, 23, of Savannah, Ga., died at a local hospital here today of gunshot wounds suffered yesterday morning when he and other prisoners in Dade County jail sought to escape. His death brings the toll in the attempted escape to two, Ollie Moore, negro trusty, having been shot and killed when deputy sheriffs repulsed the prisoners. Five other prisoners wounded by bullets fired by officers, were reported in improved condition.
Sheriff H. R. Chase and his deputies today were instituting a far-reaching search for Joe Tracy, escaped convict of the late notorious Ashley gang. Tracy is said to have been the “outside” man participating in the “crush.” Sheriffs in adjacent counties are helping in the search. Tracy, reputed one of the most dangerous of the lately shattered bandit crew, has been reported captured at Fort Lauderdale and at Palm Beach but neither report was well founded.
Other deaths may be added today to that of Ollie Moore, negro trusty, who passed out in the withering fire the attempted escapers faced as they made the jail yard. W. B. Henderson, held on charges of kidnapping and detaining a boy, is in critical condition and so is B. S. Westbury of Savannah, Ga., held for grand larceny.

Dan W. Westberry Laid to Rest Sunday.
The body of Dan W. Westberry, late of Jesup, Wayne County, Georgia, was laid to rest amid impressive ceremonies last Sunday afternoon at Flint Branch church.
The deceased had been in Miami, Florida for the past year and was a member of the Miami Police Department. He had come to Doctortown, Ga., on Saturday to bring his family to his new home in Miami.
For sometime past, the family had been living in the home of John H. Hill, at Doctortown, where they had moved since their home was destroyed by fire near Jesup. It was at Hill’s home that the domestic troubles of the Westberry’s began and Hill is alleged to have been the cause of Westberry’s desire to move his family to Miami.
On arriving at Jesup, Westberry proceeded to Doctortown and left his pistol and billy with his wife at Jesup. He met Hill on the road a few feet from the railway station there and it is believed that words were passed by the two men. The result of the meeting was the stabbing and shooting of Westberry by Hill, the wounds proving fatal to Westberry who was dead upon the arrival of Sheriff Mattox and Mr. Leith Stewart.
The body of Westberry was brought to Jesup by Mr. Stewart while Hill was taken into custody by Sheriff Mattox and lodged in the county jail awaiting the action of the grand jury.
Funeral services were held at Flint Branch church last Sunday and a delegation of Klu Klux Klansmen from Miami, Florida came to Jesup and took complete charge of the body. It is reported that as soon as the hearse was opened by Mr. Stewart of the Stewart & Knight Funeral Home, the Klansmen took charge of the body and no other hand touched it until after it was lowered into the grave. This is, I understand, the first Klan funeral ever conducted in Wayne County.
Several members of the local Klan ably assisted the visiting Klansmen. Over five hundred people witnessed the impressive ceremony.
Westberry leaves a wife and three small children and was 33 years of age.

Westberry Child Dies of Burns - On last Wednesday afternoon about five o’clock, Dorothy Westberry, little four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Westberry, was seriously burned, which caused its death the next day. It is said the child’s clothing was set afire while it was playing with matches. The funeral took place at the Bethlehem cemetery Friday, with Rev. C. N. Mills conducting the services.

Ferman Herrin, Odum, Ga., Passes - Ferman Herrin died at his home near Odum Wednesday morning at 3:00 o’clock, after an illness of only a few days with pneumonia. He was born and reared in Wayne County and was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Noah Herrin. He was twice married. His first wife as Miss Minnie Poppell, daughter of Mr. Spencer Poppell, of Wayne County, who preceded him in death several years ago, and unto this union four children were born, who now survive him. Later he was married to Miss Vida Bennett, also of Wayne County and unto this union three children were born, who also survives him. Funeral services were held this morning at Red Hill Baptist Church, five miles from Odum, and interment will follow in the church cemetery. He is now survived by his wife, Mrs. Vida Bennett Herrin; three sons and four daughters; two sisters, Mrs. Rachel Landon, and Mrs. Nancy Westberry, of Odum.

Willene Westberry Died Friday of Burns – Laid to Rest at Bennett Cemetery Sunday P.M. – Willene Westberry, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Westberry, died Friday night at the home of her parents, near Odum, from the results of burns received on Thanksgiving Day. It was thought that the child was improving until Tuesday of last week when she became critically ill from which she did not rally and the end came Friday night. Little Willene, while the family was at dinner on Thanksgiving Day poured kerosene oil on the fire, causing an explosion burning her seriously. Funeral services were held from the Bennett Cemetery, Sunday afternoon and she was laid to rest at the same place. Little Willene is survived by her parents and one little brother and a sister and a number of other relatives in Wayne County.

Mrs. Elsie Westberry Hires, wife of William P. Hires, died at her home here late Saturday night after an illness of several days. She was a daughter of Mrs. E. M. Westberry and the late E. M. Westberry of Savannah, and was at the time of her death 37 years old. She and her husband had for several years made their home in Wayne County. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Savannah. Funeral services were held from Red Hill Baptist Church Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with Rev. R. L. Whipple, pastor of the Jesup Baptist Church in charge of the services. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hires is survived by her husband and four children, Julian, Thomas, Bill and Colvin Hires; four sisters, Misses Alma and Elizabeth Westberry, Mrs. Cleo Cohen, all of Savannah, and Mrs. Ruby Mobley, of Brunswick; five brothers, J. V., V. M. and Elliott Westberry, of Savannah and W. I. Westberry, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and W. W. Westberry of Jacksonville, Fla.; and her mother, Mrs. E. M. Westberry of Savannah.

"William M. Westberry a life long Wayne County and aged citizen died at his home near Gardi, Wayne County at an early hour Saturday morning following an extended illness.
"Mr. Westberry had lived to the ripe old age of 86, and lived and died in the same section of the County his entire life, and was one of Wayne County's most prominent farmers and was active in spite of his age until a few years ago when his health failed.
"The deceased is survived by two daughters: Mrs. E. E. Kicklighter of Jesup; Mrs. H. B. Nettles of Ridgeland, SC; five sons W. K., M. H., and J.C. Westberry all of Gardi; C. D. and B. H. Westberry, both of Jesup; three brothers, Joe Westberry of Odum; John Westberry of Waycross and Noah Westberry of Brunswick; one sister, Mrs. Manerva Sikes, of Bristol and several grandchildren.
"Funeral services were held from the Gardi church Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock and interment followed in the Pendarvis Cemetery.
"The pallbearers were Alton and Emory Westberry, Eugene and Ebin Kicklighter, Jr., Walter Murphy and James Bennett.
"W. M. Hawkins Funeral Home was the undertaker in charge of arrangements."

Mrs. Martha C. Westberry Died Here in the Local Hospital - Mrs. Martha Crosby Westberry, age 40, died here in the local hospital yesterday (Wednesday) morning at 11:25 o’clock after an illness of only a few hours. She had been despondent for the past several days over learning that her son Ernest Westberry was in Shanghai, China, where the Sino-Jap war is now in progress. She became suddenly ill at her home and later carried to the Colvin-Ritch Sanitarium here for treatment where she died within a few hours. Mrs. Westberry was a native of Wayne County having been born and reared near Gardi. She was before her marriage Miss Crosby, daughter of Mr. J. W. Crosby and the late Mrs. Louisianna Crosby, pioneers of Wayne County. She was born on April 13th, 1897. She was a member of the Gardi Baptist Church. Funeral services were held from Bethlehem Baptist Church near Jesup this afternoon (Thursday) at four o’clock, with Rev. S. F. Bennett and Rev. C. M. Mills of Jesup conducting the services. Interment followed in the church Cemetery. Mrs. Westberry is survived by her husband, Steve E. Westberry; one daughter, Joan; two sons, Emory Westberry, all of Jesup; and Ernest Westberry of Shanghai, China; her father, J. W. Crosby, of Gardi; five sisters, Mrs. Ethel Strickland and Mrs. Jannie Dixon of Blackshear; Mrs. Lillia Horton and Mrs. Edna Mansfield of Gardi; and Mrs. Addie Stewart of Lakeland, Fla.; one brother, George W. Crosby of Talledega, Ala. The pallbearers were: Royal Norris, R. M. Milikin, H. L. Heritage, Ben Hopps and Roy E. Breen all of Jesup and Wilford Hern of Gardi. Wayne Funeral Home of this City was in charge of arrangements.

Last Rites Held For Mrs. Westberry - Funeral services for Mrs. Eva Westberry, 65, of Odum, who passed away recently at the home of her son, John H. Westberry of Odum, were conducted Thursday afternoon at the graveside in Bennett Cemetery. Rev. H. C. Griffin officiated. Mrs. Westberry was a native of Wayne County. Survivors include her husband; two sons, H. E. Westberry and John Westberry, both of Odum; one daughter, Mrs. Bud Wilson, Jesup. Harrison Funeral Home was in charge.

Man Fatally Hurt in Fight; Two Are Held - James R. Westberry Succumbs to Injuries Suffered in Row. James Rowland Westberry, 47 year-old Park Street resident, died in a local hospital at 4:20 A.M. yesterday as a result of injuries which he suffered in a fight at Park and Forest Streets late Saturday, according to investigating Police Patrolmen J. B. Durham and P. L. Howell. Richard Alexander Boatwright, 21, of an Elder Street address and Richard Louis Holcomb, 18 year-old sailor assigned to a local Naval Air Station, are being held in city jail on charges of suspicion of murder the officers added. Assisting in the police investigation are Police Detective Sgt. M. Ross and Detectives M. F. Coker and D. G. Butler. Boatwright absolved Holcomb of responsibility in the altercation. Justice of the Peace Sarah Bryan has ordered an autopsy performed to determine definitely the cause of the death. Investigating officers, however, believed the victim suffered a broken neck. The autopsy is expected to be held this morning.
Westberry was a native of Jesup, Ga. and was a veteran of the First World War. Survivors include his widow, this city, six sons: Nolan Westberry of the U.S. Army, stationed at Camp White, Ore.; Colan Westberry of the Marine Corps, at New River, N.C.; Henry, Marvin, Richard and Frederick Westberry, all of Jacksonville; four daughters: Dorothy, Catherine, Betty Jane and Annie Lou Westberry, all of this city; his mother, Mrs. Wallace Kenney of Fitzgerald, Ga., one brother, Marvin Westberry of the U.S. Navy and four sisters: Mrs. Bertha Susesan, Mrs. Madola Lindsey and Mrs. Ellen Stevens, all of Jacksonville and Mrs. Vester Pate of Fitzgerald. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hardage and Williams.

A. L. Turner officiating. Interment will be in the Pendarvis Cemetery near Gardi, Ga. Mr. Westberry was a native of Wayne County, Georgia and came to Jacksonville in 1909 from Jesup, Ga. He was a member of the Baptist Church. WESTBERRY - Joseph F. Westberry, 64, died Thursday morning at his home, 237 W. Ninth Street. He was a native of Wayne County, Ga., and came to this city ten years ago from Waycross. He was employed by the St. Johns River Shipbuilding Company and was a member of the Shrine of Divine Healing. Mr. Westberry is survived by his widow, Mrs. Jennie Westberry; his father, J. U. Westberry of St. Petersburg, Fla., four sons, Joseph L. Westberry, of New York City, John D. Westberry, U.S.N., Thomas Westberry, Merchant Marines, and M. M. Westberry, this city; three sisters, Mrs. J. L. Jarvis, St. Petersburg, Mrs. Ed Thair, Waycross, Ga., Mrs. W. M. Peek, Mobile, Ala., and a brother, L. C. Westberry, Waycross, Ga. Funeral services will be held at 4 P.M. today in the chapel of Key McCabe Funeral Home with the Rev. Flora Price officiating. Pallbearers will be W. E. Gardner, Rev. Chas. Lake, Louis Canova, Steve Tudor, Earl Mitchell and Fred Weimer. The body will be forwarded tonight to Savannah, Ga. for interment.

Body of Soldier is En Route Home -1945
The body of a Brunswick soldier who lost his life just nine days before the end of the recent World War is now en route home for reburial. Mrs. Eva T. Glover, wife of Stoney Glover, 2119 Union Street, yesterday received a telegram advising her that "the remains of your son, the late Pfc. William R. Westberry, are now en route to the United States."
Pfc. Westberry was fighting in the European area, where he had been for some time, and as stated, he was killed nine days before the war ended.
The telegram received by his mother yesterday said the definite date of arrival of the body could not be given, but such information will be given three days before the arrival.

Willie F. Hires Dies In Albany. Willie F. Hires, a native of Wayne County, but a resident of Arlington for the past two years died last Thursday in an Albany hospital after a short illness. Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at Red Hill Baptist Church near Jesup, by Rev. Robinson of Odum. Burial was in the church cemetery with Harrison Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Hires is survived by his wife, Mrs. Doris R. Hires of Arlington; four sons, Julian C. Hires, with the United States Navy; T. W. Hires of Brunswick and Colvin Hires and Billy Hires, both of Arlington; his mother, Mrs. Daniel Hires of Odum; four sisters, Mrs. B. D. Purcell of East Point, Mrs. R. T. Piland of Suffolk, Va., Mrs. R. A. Burkes, Odum and Miss Rosa Hires of Jesup; three brothers, F. J. Hires and E. W. Hires, both of Odum, and L. V. Hires of Jesup and one granddaughter. Active pallbearers were L. H. Riggins, A. M. Showalter, Gordon Hires, Adolph Hires, Eugene Hires and Kenneth Brannen. Honorary pallbearers were E. F. Dean, J. P. Last Rites Held For Mrs. Westberry. Mrs. Armenda T. Westberry, 45, of near Brentwood, died early Tuesday morning in a local hospital following an extended illness. She is survived by her husband, John H. Westberry, near Brentwood; two sons, Phillip Freeman Smith Westberry of Mt. Pleasant; John Garner Westberry of near Brentwood; and two daughters, Cora and Bobbie Westberry of near Brentwood. Funeral services were held on Thursday morning at the home of the deceased by Rev. Lee Walton, pastor of the Baxley Church of God. Burial followed in the Bennett Cemetery in Odum with the Wayne Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Last Rites Held For H. B. Westberry. Funeral services for Harry B. Westberry, 52, life-long resident of Wayne County, who was fatally wounded from a shotgun blast at Kendrick Logging Camp on Jones Island on the Long County side of the Altamaha River Sunday morning, were conducted Monday afternoon at the Gardi Baptist Church. Rev. Stetson Bennett officiated. Burial followed in the Pendarvis Cemetery. Harrison Funeral Home was in charge. Pallbearers were W. C. Westberry, Emory Westberry, Alton Westberry, Gene Kicklighter, Rufus Holliday, and Bennett Strickland. Honorary pallbearers were G. F. Drawdy, James Bennett, Carl Shanklin, Donald Bennett, Virgil Knight, Ted Odum, A. W. Burn and M. J. Harper. Survivors include two daughters of Niagara Falls, N. Y.; two sisters, Mrs. B. E. Kicklighter of Jesup and Mrs. John Malphurs of Ridgeland, S. C.; four brothers, W. K. Westberry and J. Cliff Westberry of Gardi; C. D. Westberry of Jesup. He was the son of the late William M. and Matilda Harper Westberry. It was stated that Mr. Westberry and William P. Henderson had a minor argument at the breakfast table and as the argument waxed hotter, Henderson started to get his single barrel shotgun. Westberry followed him, trying to reason with him, and then apologizing for his remarks. Failing to heed him, Henderson grabbed his weapon and fired as Westberry stood only a few feet away from him. The discharge tore into Westberry’s body and he fell mortally wounded. Henderson, about fifty years of age, is in the Long County Jail. Sheriff W. M. Jones, of Long County, said that Henderson claimed he fired on Westberry in self-defense. However, there is no evidence whatever to bear the claim, said Sheriff Jones. My information is that not only was the dead man unarmed, but at the time of the shooting, he was actually trying to apologize to Henderson for what had been said, as well as to reason with him.

Last Rites Held For Mrs. Westberry. Funeral services were conducted 3 p.m. Saturday for Mrs. Martha Lynn Westberry, 65, who died suddenly Friday at her residence near Odum. Services were held at the Piney Grove Church of God by the pastor, the Rev. A. J. Porter. Burial was in the church cemetery with Harrison Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Westberry is survived by her husband, Brantley Westberry; two daughters, Mrs. Joe Thompson and Mrs. Riley Strickland, Odum; three sons, Lois D. and Joe Westberry, Odum and Roy Leslie Westberry, US Army in Japan; three sisters, Mrs. W. T. Lee, Bradenton, Fla., Mrs. Jack Patton of Baxley, and Mrs. Vestus Brown, Jesup; and two brothers, George and Grady Lynn, both of Jesup. Active pallbearers were Troy Pearson, J. R. Sharpe, Elmo Stroud, Wade Landon, Elta Oliver and V. H. Oliver.

Mrs. C. L. Tyre Buried Tuesday. Funeral services for Mrs. Cassidy Lee Tyre, 80, were held Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the Jesup Church of God, with Rev. T. A. Perkins officiating, assisted by Rev. Joe Kindred. Interment was in the Red Hill Cemetery. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. W. L. Lane of Jesup; four sons, A. C., Harry S. and Milton F. Tyre, all of Jesup; and O. L. Tyre of Johnson City, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Lorine Enwright of Miami, Fla.; five brothers, Jim Westberry of Tampa, Ben and Long Westberry of Miami; Clinton Westberry of Jacksonville and T. W. Westberry of Savannah. Rinehart Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Young W. Westberry Buried Saturday. William Thomas Westberry, age 5, died last week after a short illness. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Westberry of Gardi; one sister, Shirley Westberry; two brothers, James and Aaron Westberry, both of Gardi, paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Westberry of Gardi. Funeral services was held Saturday morning of Bethlehem Baptist Church at 11:00 o’clock with Rev. Willie T. Barwick officiating. Active pallbearers were Jasper Hill, Jim Hill, Lonnie Westberry and Leon Westberry. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Besides her parents, she is survived by four sisters, Evelyn, Doris, Mabel and Helen; six brothers, Carl, Dalton, Aldon, Joe, Lee and Walter Westberry, all of Odum and Thomas Westberry of Waycross. Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning at the residence near Odum, conducted by the Rev. M. B. Norris, pastor of the Piney Grove Church of God. Burial was in the Bennett Cemetery.

Funeral services were held at graveside at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Willie Barwick.

Willie E. Westberry Buried Friday. Willie (Bill) E. Westberry, 55, died early Wednesday at the home of his sister, Mrs. M. A. Jackson in Jesup, after a short illness. Survivors are three sisters, Mrs. M. A. Jackson, Jesup; Mrs. Lillian Johnson, Enterprise, Ala., and Mrs. Susie Lane, Brunswick; two brothers, Roy Westberry, Melrose Park, Fla., and Carl Westberry, Gardi. Funeral services were held Friday at 3 p.m. at the Bethlehem Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Braswell Carter and Rev. Willie Barwick. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Walter Ring, Ralph Ring, Ellis Ring, Neal Ring, Council Brooker and Lonnie Aldridge.

Mrs. Etha L. Atkins Former Resident, Dies In California. Mrs. Etha Lou Atkins, 62 of Antioch, Calif. died Saturday. She was a native of Jesup but had moved to California from Jacksonville, Ala. In 1929. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Endie Phillips of Antioch; two sons, Cecil D. Westberry of Oakley, Calif. and Raymond J. Westberry of Antioch; four sisters, Mrs. Ellen A. Mr. Westberry of 1820 Clay St. St. Charles, Mo. Died November 10, 1959 from injuries received in an auto accident on Interstate 70 near St. Louis. He was born in Jacksonville and had lived in here all of his life, moving to St. Charles eight months ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife Mantha Jane Westberry: his mother Mollie Westberry: three daughters Charlotte, Cynthia and Mantha all of Jacksonville, four sisters Mrs. Dorothy Mae Prevatt, Mrs. Catherine Wilson, and Annie Lou Westberry all of Jacksonville and Mrs. Betty June Kelly of Ocilla, Ga. Emory Westberry Found Dead In Woods Tuesday. A week-long search for Emory Westberry, 46, of Gardi, ended Tuesday afternoon. He was found in the cab of his pick-up truck dead from a .22 caliber (?) shotgun wound. According to Wayne County Sheriff John C. Reddish's office, two high school youths saw the truck and notified Troy Fore. Deputy "Nub" Royal said, Fore investigated, found Westberry and then notified the sheriff's office by phone. Westberry had disappeared last Wednesday, February 22, and had been the object of search by National Guardsmen with jeeps and helicopters Sunday and Monday. He was found in a wooded area about one and one-half miles from the Hopkins estate in an area known as the "Old Knight Place." According to Royal, the road on which the truck was found was a seldom-used road overgrown with brush. It was about five miles from Grangerville. A veteran of World War II, Westberry was a native of Wayne County. W. H. NeSmith, Wayne County Coroner, said a note was left by Westberry. An inquest will probably be held Thursday, according to NeSmith.

He was the manager of Pic-N-Save Drug Store, in Tallahassee, and had been associated with Pic-N-Save since its beginning in 1955. He also was associated with Walgreen Drug co. of Tampa and Jacksonville. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Verna S. Wm. Westberry Boating Accident Victim Buried. William Kenneth Westberry, 26 of 205 Oak Villa Drive, drowned Thursday morning, November 2, in the Altamaha River, as the result of a boating accident. Raymond Westberry Rites in Calif.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 13th, for Raymond J. Westberry, 47 of 1396 Redwood St., Pittsburg, who died of unknown causes after being taken to the county hospital in Martinez. He moved to Antioch in 1948 and had lived in the Antioch-Pittsburg area since then. He was a former employee of U.S. Steel and the Stockton Brick co. of Pittsburg. He was a member of the Laborer's Union Local 324 of Martinez. Survivors include his wife, Anna, two daughters, Pat Carlson and Dianne Hart, both of Sacramento; a sister, Endie May White, of Antioch; a brother, Cecil D. Westberry of Oakley; one grandson and several nieces and nephews. WESTBERRY- Judge Edward P. Westberry, 63, died Sunday after a brief illness. He was born March 3, 1922, in Jacksonville and lived here all of his life, attending local schools and Jacksonville Junior College. He joined the Army at age 17; was a Veteran of WWII; and retired as Full Colonel after 35 years of service with the Florida Army National Guard. He was a member and Sunday School teacher at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Judge Westberry was Justice of the Peace from 1966-1973; was elected Judge of the County Court in 1972, and served consistently since that time, giving him 19 years of Judicial experience. He served as a Trial Judge Advocate in Military Court Martial, and was the only Judge in the state to graduate the National Judicial College, completing five of their special Judicial Seminars. Searchers continued looking Monday for a man who was presumed drowned after going for a swim Sunday in Lake George. Samuel Westberry Jr., 23, of Dona Vista in Lake County, disappeared around 5 p.m. Sunday, after he and a friend jumped into the water. Westberry was on a boat with four other adults and two children, the Florida Game and Fish Commission said, when he decided to go for a swim. Witnesses told the Volusia County Sheriff's Office that others in the boat heard Westberry hit the water and then say he couldn't swim. He called for help, witnesses said, and then slipped beneath the surface. His friend swam back to the boat. Although Westberry's friends tossed flotation devices into the water and went in after him, they were unable to find him. Alcohol may have been a factor in the accident, officials said. Westberry disappeared about a half-mile from the shore, northeast of the jetties. Visibility is poor in the water there, a Game and Fish Commission spokesman said, making the search difficult. Dive teams from both Lake and Volusia counties assisted in the search, which went on throughout Sunday night and Monday. A Volusia sheriff's helicopter also assisted.

ODUM -- Edward Westberry, 70, died Sept. 16, 1999 after an extended illness.
He was a native of Wayne County and a retired farmer.

Fred Vincent Westberry, 51, passed away Dec. 30, 2002 at N. Fulton Regional Hospital after a short battle with cancer. The Roswell, Ga., lawyer had fought courageously for his life. His efforts and contributions on behalf of others who needed legal services have touched many lives. Outside of the field of law, his passion was his musical talent. He enjoyed playing most instruments but was best known for his style on the saxophone. A native of St. Lucy, Fla., he had lived in Waycross for the past several years. He was working as assistant manager of the Friendly Express Store in Blackshear. He is the son of Jackie Walker of Homerville and the late Ira Melvin Westberry.
Survivors other than his mother are four sisters, Cathy Spradley, Sherrie Thompson, Lorrie Stalvey, and Lisa Westberry, all of Homerville; a close friend, Jamie Hagen of Waycross; and several nieces and nephews.

WESTBERRY Betty Jo Westberry, 78, passed away January 5, 2004. She was a founding member of Mandarin Baptist Church and also help found the Mandarin Art Festival. Mrs. Westberry was predeceased by her husband, Judge Edward P. Westberry in 1985 and her daughter, Cynthia Cobleigh and 1996. Mrs. Westberry is survived by her granddaughter, Jessica (Earl) Smith, and great-grandson, Adrian Cobleigh, both of Jacksonville; two sisters, Gladys Chairess of Hobert, OK and Sue (Ronald) Cornelius of Altus, OK; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tomorrow evening, Thursday, January 8, 2004 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 9, 2004 in Mandarin Cemetery with Dr. William H. Yeldell officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jacksonville Humane Society. Cecil David Westberry was born August 30, 1915 in Jessup GA, and went home to be with his Lord, January 20, 2004 at his residence in Oakley at the age of 88. Cecil married Edna Owens of Jacksonville, Alabama in 1936. The family relocated to Camp Stoneman at Pittsburg while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. They moved to their home in Oakley in 1950. Prior to retirement in 1980, he worked at the Fiberboard in Antioch, Concord Naval Weapons Station, Travis Air Force Base and the Oakland Naval Supply Center. Cecil was a charter member of Pittsburg Baptist Church. He helped establish and build the first Southern Baptist Church in Oakley, where he was ordained as a Deacon. He also served as a Deacon at Immanuel Baptist Church of Antioch until his stroke in 1996. He enjoyed spending time with his family. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and farming. He especially enjoyed beating his sons in a game of Dominoes. He is survived by his wife Edna of 67 years; children, Dan and wife Thirsia of Antioch, Dean and wife Gwena of Oklahoma, Gloria Eaton of Livermore, Glenn and wife Beverly of Antioch, and Faye and husband Wayne Tobin of Oakley. He is the cherished grandfather of 13 and great grandfather of 26, also survived by one niece, Juanita Davis of Oakley. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald in 1940, son-in-law, Don Eaton, brother Jack, and sister Endie Mae. Service will be at 1:45 p.m. January 23 at Immanuel Baptist Church, 55 East 18th Street, Antioch. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Immanuel Baptist Church Building Fund.

Robbie "Roy" Westberry Sr., 77, of Jesup died Jan. 28, 2004, after an extended illness. The Wayne County native was a farmer. Survivors are his wife of 38 years, Martha Long Westberry of Jesup; a daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Scott Long of Orchard, Tenn.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Jan. 31 from Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Livesay officiating. Interment was in the Piney Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Eddie Westberry, Derek Driggers, Matthew Batten, Carlton Batten, Matthew Westberry and Ronnie Lane. Honorary pallbearers were Hospice of South Georgia.

Jared J. Westberry, 80, passed away July 20, 2004. A graduate of Florida State University in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration he was a member of the fraternity Phi Kappa Tau. Employed in the Credit Union Movement, Jared began as a representative of the Florida Credit Union League for 5 years organizing over 40 credit unions in the state of Florida. He was manager (CEO) of the Jax Police Credit Union, Ryder Federal Credit Union and retired from Southern St. Johns Federal Credit Union in 1989, Jared was also a member of the USGA, the Jacksonville Beach Golf Club and the Golden Putters. Survivors include his wife, Loretta K. Westberry, daughters Erin Wheeler, stepdaughter Sherrie K. Shaffer, stepson-in-law Casey Shaffer, step granddaughter Hali K. Shafer, sisters: Lucille Thompson Allen and Jeanette Cavanaugh, brothers: Clint Westberry and Jake Westberry and mother-in-law Reba Shafer. A memorial Service is going to be held on Sunday, August 22, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Arlington Park Funeral Home with Bishop Vaughn McLaughlin officiating

Bertie Elliott Westberry, 72, of Cusseta, Ga., died Friday, September 3, 2004, after an extended illness. The Wayne Co. Ga., native had lived in Cusseta since 1964 & was a homemaker. She attended North Highland Assembly of God & was the widow of Harold Frank Westberry. Survivors are a daughter and a son-in-law: DuEnne & Charles Anderson of Cusseta, Ga., 1 sister: Clara Davis Smith of Columbus, Ga., 1 brother: Robert Elliott of Columbus, Ga., 2 granddaughters: Shanda & Lewis Gunnells of Preston, Ga., & Alena Anderson of Cusseta, Ga., several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 3 P. M. Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, from the Rinehart & Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chuck Griffith officiating. Interment will be in the Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be: Wally Hall, Ronny Cooksey, Winton Westberry, Larry Westberry, Kenny Westberry, & Jimmy Thompson. Visitation will be 2 to 3 P. M. Sunday from the funeral home.
