IN MEMORIAM -
On May the 14, 1906, Brother Milton Westberry, died at the home
of his son, Bro. J. S. Westberry, in Sylvester, Worth County,
Ga. Neither the Worshipful Master nor any of the brethren of Jesup
Lodge had been informed of Bro. Westberry's sickness until after
his death and it was only a few hours before the arrival of the
train with his remains, that we were aware of the sad event, hence
to our great regret it was impossible at that time to pay him
the last sad honer to which he was entitled, as a worthy Mason.
Bro. Westberry was born in originally Appling, now Wayne County,
on the 23d day of December 1823. He became a member of the Missionary
Baptist Church at the age of 24 and had for many years been a
leader in his church. At one time he was received as a Minister
and often preached in the absence of the Pastor.
Bro. Westberry was made a Mason in Altamaha Lodge No. 227, in
Liberty County, Ga. in 1869, was admitted from that Lodge in 1873,
placing his dimit in Jesup Lodge soon after its organization in
1874.
During the war between the States, Bro. Westberry was a brave
Confederate soldier and served his State with conspicious bravery
and unswerving integrity. At the close of the war he returned
home to his old home County and resumed his labors as a millwright
and mechanic.
He was always ready and willing to assist the helpless, and needy
and nobly served his day and generation, modest, gentle, amiable,
loving and beloved.
He has gone to his reward, to dwell in peace and joy forever in
the "House not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens."
As a Mason and as a man, as a minister and as a friend, as a soldier
in the several fines of battle, as a private citizen in the calm
pursuits of peace, he was ever obedient to the call of duty, loving
the best interests of his fellow man, and fighting all his life
for humanity.
Resolved: That our brother has wrought well has earned the plaudits
of his State, his Church, and his Lodge, and now has received
the Master's plaudit, "Well done thou good and faithful servant."
Resolved further: That a copy of these resolutions be furnished
the family of the deceased brother and The Jesup Sentinel and
Wayne County News for publication.
Quite a large crowd of Masons of Jesup and other parts of the
county attended the Masonic funeral of Mr. Milton Westberry at
Flint Branch Sunday. The Masonic services, conducted by Worshipful
Master George F. Armstrong of Jesup Lodge, was very interesting
and impressive as well as being beautiful. Past Master W. R. Thompson,
formerly of Jesup Lodge, but now of Waycross, preached a splendid
masonic sermon. A great congregation of the friends and relatives
of the deceased were in attendance. A committee was appointed
to draft suitable resolutions of respect to Mr. Westberry, who
has been a true and faithful member of the order. It was resolved
that a copy of the resolutions be published in the Wayne County
News and the Jesup Sentinel and that a copy of same be presented
to the bereathed family.

Wayne Co. Official Strops Razor and Slashes Throat. Jesup, Ga.,
April 15. - (Special.) -
W. Brack Westberry, a prominent citizen of Wayne county, committed
suicide at his home near here today. Telling his family that he
was going to feed his horses, Westberry went to the horse lot,
taking his razor and strop with him. After whetting the blade,
he cut a deep gash in the right side of his throat. When discovered
a few minutes later by his son, Hugh Westberry, he was dead. The
strop was hanging on a barn wall near by. Westberry, who was county
road superintendent, had been in bad health for some time and
brooded over this until his mind became affected, causing him
to kill himself.

Death of Mrs. Wilder We regret to chronicle the sad death of Mrs.
Minnie Wilder, which occurred at her home at Broadhurst on the
7th day of October about 8 oclock p.m. God in his wisdom
saw best to take this valuable citizen from our midst and transplant
her in a home not made with hands eternal in the heavens. Mrs.
Wilder was 42 years of age, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
R. J. Westberry. She was married 27 years ago to Mr. W. C. Wilder.
Two sons, Hugh and Theodore were born to this happy couple. She
was a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Wilder was sick about eight
weeks, part of which time was spent in Dr. Rogers Sanitarium,
having been taken there by her faithful physician, Dr. Gordon.
The writer is well aware of the fact that all has been done that
could be done to restore this good lady to her natural health,
but it was Gods will and not ours and we feel that our loss
is her eternal gain. Mrs. Wilder was a member of Little Creek
Baptist Church, having united there when she was 15 years old.
She was a faithful member and a Christian woman. She was laid
to rest in Little Creek Cemetery and funeral services being conducted
by her pastor, Rev. E. L. Litt. May the spirit of God be with
the bereaved relatives.

Dan W. Westberry Laid to Rest Sunday.
The body of Dan W. Westberry, late of Jesup, Wayne County, Georgia,
was laid to rest amid impressive ceremonies last Sunday afternoon
at Flint Branch church.
The deceased had been in Miami, Florida for the past year and
was a member of the Miami Police Department. He had come to Doctortown,
Ga., on Saturday to bring his family to his new home in Miami.
For sometime past, the family had been living in the home of John
H. Hill, at Doctortown, where they had moved since their home
was destroyed by fire near Jesup. It was at Hills home that
the domestic troubles of the Westberrys began and Hill is
alleged to have been the cause of Westberrys desire to move
his family to Miami.
On arriving at Jesup, Westberry proceeded to Doctortown and left
his pistol and billy with his wife at Jesup. He met Hill on the
road a few feet from the railway station there and it is believed
that words were passed by the two men. The result of the meeting
was the stabbing and shooting of Westberry by Hill, the wounds
proving fatal to Westberry who was dead upon the arrival of Sheriff
Mattox and Mr. Leith Stewart.
The body of Westberry was brought to Jesup by Mr. Stewart while
Hill was taken into custody by Sheriff Mattox and lodged in the
county jail awaiting the action of the grand jury.
Funeral services were held at Flint Branch church last Sunday
and a delegation of Klu Klux Klansmen from Miami, Florida came
to Jesup and took complete charge of the body. It is reported
that as soon as the hearse was opened by Mr. Stewart of the Stewart
& Knight Funeral Home, the Klansmen took charge of the body
and no other hand touched it until after it was lowered into the
grave. This is, I understand, the first Klan funeral ever conducted
in Wayne County.
Several members of the local Klan ably assisted the visiting Klansmen.
Over five hundred people witnessed the impressive ceremony.
Westberry leaves a wife and three small children and was 33 years
of age.

pastor First Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed in
Jesup Cemetery with pallbearers as follows: Leon High, Troy Highsmith,

The deceased came to his death as he entered the home of his brother-in-law,
David S. Price, Saturday night October 12, 1939 under threats
to kill Price and was shot there in the kitchen where the owner
had retreated to avoid trouble, he said. A coroner's jury exhonorated
Price, returning verdict of justifiable homocide within a few
minutes after the shooting. Close relatives of the deceased have
also exhonorated Mr. Price. It is said, and have expressed deep
regrets over the trying and unfortunate circumstances, they stated.
Domestic difficulties in the Tyre family resulted in a warrant
being sworn out against Tyre charging assault with intent to murder.
Tyre posted $500 bond and was released. He then is said to have
made threats to kill his wife and brother-in-law and a peace warrant
was sworn out as a safeguard, stated Sheriff Warren. Tyre secured
a shotgun and went to Price's office and finding no one there
he awaited their return. Sheriff Warren was notified and immediately
went to Price's office, and unarmed Tyre, but Tyre fled and went
to the scene of the shooting. Price had gone through a back way
to his home, in the meantime, and had only arrived at his home
a few minutes before Tyre came, it is said.
Surviving are his wife, formerly Miss Gladys Price, three children,
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Layton Tyre, and a brother, Louie of

had lain still on the trestle, but she raised her head and was
decapitated. High said she could have jumped from the trestle,
which was only about six feet above the water. Also fishing with
her father was Joycelyns brother, Dade Jefferson Westberry,

Searchers continued looking Monday for a man who was presumed
drowned after going for a swim Sunday in Lake George. Samuel Westberry
Jr., 23, of Dona Vista in Lake County, disappeared around 5 p.m.
Sunday, after he and a friend jumped into the water. Westberry
was on a boat with four other adults and two children, the Florida
Game and Fish Commission said, when he decided to go for a swim.
Witnesses told the Volusia County Sheriff's Office that others
in the boat heard Westberry hit the water and then say he couldn't
swim. He called for help, witnesses said, and then slipped beneath
the surface. His friend swam back to the boat. Although Westberry's
friends tossed flotation devices into the water and went in after
him, they were unable to find him. Alcohol may have been a factor
in the accident, officials said. Westberry disappeared about a
half-mile from the shore, northeast of the jetties. Visibility
is poor in the water there, a Game and Fish Commission spokesman
said, making the search difficult. Dive teams from both Lake and
Volusia counties assisted in the search, which went on throughout
Sunday night and Monday. A Volusia sheriff's helicopter also assisted.
