Westberry Child Found Dead. W. L. Westberry, the little two year
old son of Mr. H. J. Westberry of Perry, Florida was brought to
Odum last Sunday afternoon for the burial in the Westberry Cemetery,
the child having died on Saturday March 23, 1929 before. The little
boy was found in a pool of water in the woods not far from his
home where he in company with several other children were gathering
wild flowers. Mystery somewhat surrounds the death of the boy
as he was found in a shallow puddle which is said to have not
been of sufficient depth for drowning. The other children had
been separated from the little boy for about twenty or thirty
minutes before he was missed from the party and when they made
a search for him he was found dead. The funeral was held at 4
o’clock with Rev. L. R. Wadkins, pastor of the Odum Baptist
Church officiating. Surviving him is his father, two sisters,
Burnice and Bonita and two brothers, R. M. and Eldred.

W. M. Westberry Passes January 15, 1931 - W. M. Westberry died
Thursday morning, January 15th, at the home of his son, R. C.
Westberry, near Odum, at 7 o’clock, after an illness of a
few days. He was born February 20th, 1854, and lived to the venerable
age of 74. He was married to Miss Rachel Westberry, who died in
1898. Under this union were born five sons and four daughters.
He had been a member of the Red Hill Baptist church for about
forty-seven years and was a deacon for forty years. The funeral
took place Friday afternoon at three o’clock at the family
cemetery, with Rev. C. F. Burke, his pastor, in charge of the
service. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. J. M. Clark, of
Jesup; Mrs. L. W. Westberry, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Mrs. I. L.
Langford, of Waycross, Mrs. J. M. Cameron, of Fargo; five sons,
W. E. Westberry, of Perry, Fla.; H. J. Westberry, of Perry, Fla.;
D. M. Westberry, of Osteen, Fla.; C. M. and R. C. Westberry, of
Jesup. Pallbearers were his grandsons, who were as follows: Smith
Westberry, C. M. Westberry, Bert Westberry, Chester Cameron and
Joe Clark.

Gordon Hubert Westberry, Jr., Jacksonville Fla. - On Monday afternoon
at 1 o’clock, Feb. 23rd, the death angel visited the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon H. Westberry, of Jacksonville, Fla., and
took away their little three weeks old son, Gordon Hubert, Jr.
He was ill only a short time, and all was done that loving hands
could do, but God saw fit to take it. Those surviving are his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Westberry, and a host of relatives
who mourn his death. Those who attended the funeral from other
places were Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Westberry and sons, Harry and Monroe,
from Osteen, Fla., and Miss Mable Stewart from Lake City, Fla.
The funeral and interment was held at Westberry cemetery, Tuesday
afternoon at 4 o’clock. Rev. C. F. Burke conducted the services.

John Westberry; Late Wayne Citizen Passes - John Westberry, life-long
Wayne County citizen died at his home June 30, 1932, following
a long illness. Old age mostly being the cause of his death. Mr.
Westberry had lived to the ripe old age of 83 and was a life-long
Wayne County citizen having been born and reared in Wayne County.
His wife, Mrs. Annie Westberry, preceded him in death a few years
ago, and since her death he had made his home with his children.
Funeral services were held from the residence near Madray Springs,
Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock with Rev. C. F. Burke, pastor
of the Ritch Baptist Church in charge of the ceremonies. Interment
followed in the Westberry Cemetery. The deceased is survived by
the following children, four daughters, Mrs. L. M. Weterington,
Mrs. Vallie Griffin, Mrs. Nora Herrin and Mrs. Laura Bell Thompson,
thirty-one grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, besides
a host of relatives and friends. Chenoweth Funeral Home of Jesup
were the undertakers in charge.

Mrs. Kate Clary Ogden Passes in Brunswick - Mrs. Kate Clary Ogden,
wife of John Ogden, died at her home in Brunswick Saturday night
(September 21, 1935) following an illness of only two days. Apoplexy
being the cause of her death of which she was stricken with Friday
afternoon and gradually grew worse until the end came. Mrs. Ogden
was born and reared in Wayne County and was 53 years old at the
time of her death. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Allen Clary, Sr., pioneers of Wayne County. After her marriage
to Mr. Ogden she moved to Brunswick where they resided for the
past thirty years. The remains were brought to Jesup by the Wayne
Funeral Home and prepared for burial, which was held from the
Piney Grove Methodist Church at five o’clock, nine miles
west of Jesup, Sunday afternoon, with the pastor, Rev. A. P. Foster
in charge of the services, assisted by Rev. R. L. Whipple, pastor
of the Jesup Baptist Church and Rev. Ralph Ogden of Jacksonville,
Fla. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The deceased is
survived by her husband, her step-mother, Mrs. Margaret Clary,
of Odum; four sisters, Mrs. W. D. O’Neal of Miami, Fla.;
Mrs. R. L. Reddish, Mrs. Isham Knight and Mrs. John H. Westberry,
all of Odum; four brothers, David Clary of Brunswick; Willie,
Allen and Edward Clary, of Odum. The pallbearers were Joseph E.
Evans of Brunswick, Leonard Moody of South Carolina, Rufus Knight
of Odum, Bryant Westberry, J. H. Westberry, of Jesup and Herbert
Reddish of Ways Station.

Mrs. Martha C. Westberry Died Here in the Local Hospital - Mrs.
Martha Crosby Westberry, age 40, died here in the local hospital
yesterday (Wednesday) morning August 25, 1937 at 11:25 o’clock
after an illness of only a few hours. She had been despondent
for the past several days over learning that her son Ernest Westberry
was in Shanghai, China, where the Sino-Jap war is now in progress.
She became suddenly ill at her home and later carried to the Colvin-Ritch
Sanitarium here for treatment where she died within a few hours.
Mrs. Westberry was a native of Wayne County having been born and
reared near Gardi. She was before her marriage Miss Crosby, daughter
of Mr. J. W. Crosby and the late Mrs. Louisianna Crosby, pioneers
of Wayne County. She was born on April 13th, 1897. She was a member
of the Gardi Baptist Church. Funeral services were held from Bethlehem
Baptist Church near Jesup this afternoon (Thursday) at four o’clock,
with Rev. S. F. Bennett and Rev. C. M. Mills of Jesup conducting
the services. Interment followed in the church Cemetery. Mrs.
Westberry is survived by her husband, Steve E. Westberry; one
daughter, Joan; two sons, Emory Westberry, all of Jesup; and Ernest
Westberry of Shanghai, China; her father, J. W. Crosby, of Gardi;
five sisters, Mrs. Ethel Strickland and Mrs. Jannie Dixon of Blackshear;
Mrs. Lillia Horton and Mrs. Edna Mansfield of Gardi; and Mrs.
Addie Stewart of Lakeland, Fla.; one brother, George W. Crosby
of Talledega, Ala. The pallbearers were: Royal Norris, R. M. Milikin,
H. L. Heritage, Ben Hopps and Roy E. Breen all of Jesup and Wilford
Hern of Gardi. Wayne Funeral Home of this City was in charge of
arrangements.

Mrs. Margaret H. Clary Died at Her Home Wed. - Mrs. Margaret Hester
Clary, wife of the late Allen Clary, Sr., aged and beloved citizen
of Wayne County died at her home near Odum yesterday September
15, 1937 (Wednesday) a. m. following an illness of several months
and being aged. She had lived to the ripe old age of 84 and had
lived all her life near Odum where she died. Her husband preceded
her in death some several years ago. She was a member of the Methodist
Church at Piney Grove. She is survived by four sons; Willie, Edward
and Allen Clary of Odum and David Clary of Brunswick; two daughters,
Mrs. J. H. Westberry and Mrs. J. I. Knight, both of Odum and several
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted
from the Piney Grove Methodist Church near Odum Thursday morning
at 11 o'clock by Rev. J. W. Hays, pastor and Rev. Jackson, pastor
of the Piney Grove Church of God. She was laid to rest beside
her husband in the church cemetery. The pallbearers consisted
of her grandsons as follows: Rufus and Reubin Knight; Earl and
J. W. Westberry and others.

Luther M. Clary Funeral Held. Funeral services for Luther M. Clary,
54, well-known druggist and a native to Wayne, who died at his
home in Savannah Monday October 27, 1940 were held from Trinity
Methodist Church, Savannah, Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock
with the Rev. Anthony Hearn, pastor and the Rev. Arthur Jackson,
D.D., pastor of First Baptist Church of Savannah officiating.
Mr. Clary had not been feeling well for several days, it was said,
and he had had a severe chill and fever and Sunday night, he was
suddenly stricken fatally. He died at 9:30 o’clock. He was
a native of Wayne County and was a son of the late U. C. Clary,
a former Ordinary of Wayne. He was born April 5, 1886. He had
been in Savannah operating a drug store on Bull Street since 1916
and more recently had established another drug store in Savannah.
Mr. Clary was a member of Landrum Lodge No. 48, F.&A.M., the
Chatham Pharmaceutical Association and the Chamber of Commerce
of Savannah. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Clara M. Clary; a daughter,
Miss Betty Loraine Clary; seven brothers, the Rev. Geo. E. Clary
of Macon; the Rev. Simon Clary of Sparks; Roy Clary of Winter
Haven, Fla.; Joseph Clary of Atlanta; W. T. Clary of Jesup; Clarence
Clary of Rincon; and J. Nat Clary of Atlanta; and two sisters,
Mrs. Patrick Lyles of Jesup; and Mrs. Basil Arnett of Mt. Pleasant.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Samuel F. Rosen, Dr. Lawrence Lee,
Dr. A. J. Waring, Dr. J. H. Pinholster, Dr. T. A. Grant, Dr. J.
K. Quattlebaum and Dr. Edwin N. Manor. Active pallbearers were
R. Patten Watson, Herbert D. Seim, E. Jussey, George Moore, Wallace
W. Cowart, Walter E. Brown and John Harms, all of Savannah. Interment
was in Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah.

Mrs. Nancy Clary Dies in Florida - Mrs. Nancy Clary, age 64, former
Wayne County resident, passed away after a short illness July
15, 1943 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Mrs. Clary was the daughter
of Caleb and Mary Westberry and the wife of Frank Clary. After
Mr. Clary's death, she moved to Florida and since made her home
there. She is survived by two brothers, John and Dave Westberry
of Jesup, one sister, Mrs. S. J. Odum of Ft. Lauderdale; one niece,
Mrs. Paul Rode and one grand niece, Helen Rode of Ft. Lauderdale.
Mrs. Clary, better known as "Aunt Nancy" will long be
remembered by her many friends for her kindness.

Joshua H. Harper Dies Wednesday. Joshua H. Harper, 82, popular
and lifelong citizen of Wayne County, passed away at the family
residence at Little Creek, late Wednesday afternoon September
23, 1943 after an extended illness. Mr. Harper engaged in farming
ever since young manhood, and resided within a short distance
of where he lived all of his life. He was a lifelong member of
Little Creek Baptist Church, being quite active in all affairs
of this church. He was married to Katie Westberry of Glynn County,
March 15, 1882. Survivors include, besides his widow, nine children,
six sons and three daughters. The six sons are James H. Harper,
Harry Harper, Eddie Harper, Virgil Harper, Ernest Harper and Ben
Harper, all of Wayne County; the three daughters, Mrs. Richard
Bennett, Wayne County, Mrs. Nora Rogers, Miami, Fla., Mrs. L.
F. Bennett, Brunswick; thirty-seven grandchildren; thirty-seven
great-grandchildren; one brother, James D. Harper, Orlando, Fla.;
three sisters, Mrs. Mary Anderson, Hortense, Mrs. Sallie Richardson,
Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs. Liza Love, Savannah, besides a large
number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted
from Little Creek Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at three o'clock.
Rev. E. L. Little and Rev. W. B. Feagins will officiate, and interment
will be in the church cemetery. Wayne Funeral Home will be in
charge.

Mrs. Clary Passes In Local Hospital. Mrs. Maggie Clary, 71, of
Odum, died Tuesday, December 19, 1944 at the local hospital after
a two-week’s illness. Funeral services were held the following
Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at the Odum Methodist
Church, conducted by Rev. E. A. Martin. Burial was in the church
cemetery with the Wayne Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Clary is
survived by her husband, L. C. Clary, a daughter, Mrs. Ella C.
Ahl of Odum; a son, E. S. Clary of Brunswick; a grandson, J. W.
Ahl of Odum; a granddaughter, Miss Helen Clary of Brunswick; a
great-grandson, J. W. Ahl of Odum; two sisters, Mrs. S. L. Youmans
and Mrs. E. A. Richardson, both of Jesup; and three brothers,
Harry H. Daniels and L. F. Daniels, both of Odum and J. A. Daniels,
Savannah. Pallbearers were C. C. Harris, Robert Harris, John O’Quinn,
George Thompson, Terrell Sutton and J. S. Shuptrine.

Funeral Services For Mrs. Clarke. Funeral services for Mrs. Laura
Westberry Clarke, who passed away Saturday night January 20, 1945
at the home of her son-in-law, R. L. Price, were conducted Monday
afternoon at the graveside in Westberry cemetery with Rev. John
R. Graham officiating. Mrs. Clarke, wife of the late Jesse Clarke,
had resided in Wayne County her entire life. She was a daughter
of William and Rachael Westberry. She is survived by four daughters,
Mrs. D. M. Aspinwall, Odum; Mrs. O. W. Strickland, Brunswick;
Mrs. L. C. Aspinwall, Odum, and Mrs. R. L. Price, Jesup; five
sons, W. L. Clarke, J. P. Clarke and Barnard Clarke of Jesup;
James F. Clarke of Brunswick and Sgt. Jesse M. Clarke, with the
Air Force in the South Pacific; three sisters, Mrs. W. T. Westberry

Mrs. Kate Westberry Harper Succumbs - Mrs. Kate Westberry Harper,
86, wife of Joshua H. Harper, died Sunday a.m. September 14, 1947
at her home, after an extended illness. Mrs. Harper was born in
Brunswick, February 24, 1861, and lived there until she married,
moving to Wayne County. She was a member of Little Creek Baptist
Church, where she took a very active part until failing health
deprived her of these privileges. She lived a useful and active
life which should be as an example for her oncoming generation.
She was preceded by her husband in death on September 23, 1942.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock
at Little Creek Baptist Church with Rev. E. L. Little officiating,
assisted by Rev. D. E. Little and Rev. C. N. Mills. Burial was
in the church cemetery with Rinehart Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements. Active pallbearers were Eugene Harper, Stetson Bennett,
H. C. Harper, Raybon Bennett, T. B. Harper and Clyde Harper. Honorary
pallbearers were George Harper, L. Harper, H. G. Smith, T. E.
Dekle, Lewis Rooks, A. J. Hopkins, Henry Horton and John D. Harper.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Nora Rogers, Miami, Fla.;
Mrs. Maude Bennett, Little Creek; Mrs. Iva Bennett, Brunswick;

Harper, Virgil Harper and Ben Harper, all of Little Creek, thirty-nine

Mrs. Reddish Passes Sunday - Mrs. Ann Eliza Reddish, who would
have been 90 years old on May 14, died at her home in Odum, Sunday,
(September 16, 1948) after a long illness. Funeral services were
held Monday afternoon at 4 o’clock at Odum Baptist Church,
of which Mrs. Reddish was a member, by Rev. E. A. Martin and Rev.
Frank Harris. Burial was in Joyner Cemetery near Odum, with Rinehart
Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Reddish was born
in Wayne County on May 26, 1858 and lived here all of her life.
She was the widow of R. S. Reddish. Mrs. Reddish is survived by
a daughter, Mrs. G. C. Bennett of Darien; three sons, Linton,
Ralph and Pierce Reddish of Odum; two sons-in-law, H. L. Harris
of Jesup and G. C. Bennett of Darien, Twenty-four grandchildren
and nineteen great-grandchildren, a brother, H. L. Clary of Odum
and a sister, Mrs. Martin Blitch of Houston Texas. Grandsons served
as active pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were J. R. Thompson,
Walter Griffis, S. J. Hires, J. M. Wilson, C. C., G. G., Ernest,
O. L. and Raymond Harris, Sumpter Flowers, S. J. Shuptrine, Don
Pearce, D. F. Thomas and Coy Roberts.

R. L. Westberry Dies At Home. Funeral services were conducted
Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock for Robert Lee (Bob) Westberry
who died Sunday night January 2, 1949 at his home after an extended
illness. Services were held at Red Hill Baptist Church with Rev.
John R. Graham officiating. Harrison Funeral Home had charge of
the arrangements. Mr. Westberry was the son of the late Sim and
Leacy Westberry, both of Jesup and is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Katie Westberry; two daughters, Mrs. Lester Teston and Mrs. Ira
Edenfield and one son, Luther C. Westberry, all of Jesup. Active
pallbearers were Robert Westberry, Robert Poole, Ollen Stewart,
Ottis Nunn, Benny Waters and Alfred Strickland.

Final Rites Held For Mrs. Westberry. Funeral services were conducted
Saturday at 3 p.m. for Mrs. Mary Ann Westberry, 87, who died last
Thursday night (June 9, 1949) in Jacksonville, Fla. after an extended
illness. Services were held at Piney Grove Church of God with
Rev. A. J. Porter officiating. Burial was in the Westberry Cemetery
with Harrison Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Surviving
Mrs. Westberry are four daughters, Mrs. Vallie Griffis, Mrs. Estelle
Wetherington, Mrs. Gladys Hannah, all of Jacksonville and Mrs.
Nora Herrin of Brunswick; also four sons, L. W. and C. L. Westberry
of Jacksonville, G. F. Westberry of Needland, Texas, and O. O.
Westberry of Valdosta; thirty-five grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.

Howell Westberry, Resident of Perry Since 1925, Passes.
Perry, Aug. 9 - Howell John Westberry, 63, a native of Jesup,
Ga., but a resident of Perry since 1925, died at his home here
last Friday August 3, 1950. Funeral services were held Saturday
in the Perry Baptist Church with interment in the Perry Cemetery.
Mr. Westberry was prominently identified with the naval stores
and lumber industry. He was a thirty-second degree Mason, deacon
in the Baptist Church and a charter member of the Perry Lions
Club. Survivors include his widow, Verdie Ammons Westberry; three
sons, E. L., R. M. and J. L., all of Perry; five daughters, Mrs.
W. L. Jackson of Jacksonville, Mrs. R. L. Edwards, Miss Bonita
Westberry, Miss Barbara Jean Westberry and Miss Patricia Westberry,

Mrs. Ella Ahl, Odum, Passes. Mrs. Ella Mae Clary Ahl, 59, died
unexpectedly early Sunday morning December 10, 1950 at her home
in Odum. Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the
Odum Baptist Church. Burial was in the Odum Cemetery. She is survived
by one son, J. W. Ahl, Odum; two brothers, Henry L. Clary, Odum
and E. S. Clary of Brunswick, and two grandchildren of Odum. Active

Westberry, 67, who died Saturday March 17, 1951 at his home near
Odum after an extended illness, were held at 3 p.m. Monday, at

JOSHUA MONROE Westberry - Kingsland, Ga., July 5, 1951 -- J. M.
Westberry, 66, city councilman and prominent Kingsland citizen,
died at his home this morning following a short illness. He was
born and reared in Jesup, Wayne County, Ga. and was engaged in
the naval stores business there for several years. He moved in
1946 to Kingsland, where he was engaged in business until his
death. Mr. Westberry was elected to the City Council in 1949.
He was a member of the Kingsland Baptist Church and was a Mason.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ruth Ammons Westberry; three
sisters, Mrs. L. W. Westberry, Mrs. I. L. Langford, Jacksonville,
and Mrs. J. M. Cameron, Lakeland, Ga.; three brothers, D. M. Westberry,
Pritchardville, S. C., C. M. Westberry, St. Marys, and R. C. Westberry,
Jacksonville. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 P.M.

years, was the father of Harry W. Westberry, Duval County legislator;

WESTBERRY- Mrs. Miley Turner Westberry, 65, of 319 E. 5th St.,
died yesterday in a local hospital following an illness of several
months. A native of Georgia, she had resided in this city for
five years and was a member of the Methodist Church. She is survived
by a daughter, Mrs. R. S. Oaks, Macon, Ga.; a son, L. W. Westberry,
Patterson, Ga.; three sisters, Mrs. Marvin Steedley, Alma, Ga.,
Mrs. Pithiney Robinson, Augusta, Ga., and Mrs. S. T. Roland, Nichols,
Ga.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The body
will be forwarded to Patterson, Ga. Sunday morning where funeral
services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Patterson Methodist
Church with burial in the Patterson Cemetery. Local arrangements
are in charge of Estes-Krauss Funeral Home.

Attends Funeral Services Here. Mr. and Mrs. Lige Carter and family
of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Jesup, have returned home
after being called to Jesup, due to the sudden death of Mrs. Carter’s
son by a former marriage, Junior Westberry, which occurred near
Jacksonville, Fla., in an automobile accident, September 18, 1955.
Junior Westberry was living in Jesup at the time of his death.
He was 19 years old and is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mattie
Westberry Carter, his stepfather, and four sisters, Mildred Tier
and Jeanette Grice of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Myrtle Irwin of Miami,

Duval Solon's Mother Dies; Rites Today
Mrs. Millie Purcell Westberry, 66, of 3853 [1843 per Rae Oliver]
(sic) Perry St., died in a local hospital yesterday December 14,
1955 after a long illness. she was the mother of Harry Westberry,
Duval County representative in the State Legislature.
Mrs. Westberry was a native of Jesup, Ga., and had lived in Jacksonville
about 2½ years. she was a member of the Altamaha Baptist
Church of Jesup.
Survivors include two other sons, Gordon Westberry and Monroe
Westberry, both of Jacksonville; two brothers, B.D. Purcell of
Atlanta and A.E. Purcell of Jesup; two sisters, Mrs. J.M. Griffin
and Mrs. B.B. Dent of Jacksonville; three grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be at the Altamaha Baptist Church near Jesup
at 3 p.m. today. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with Hardage
and Sons, Northside Funeral Home in charge.

Ave. died Tuesday at Honolulu, Hawaii. Mr. Roberson lived in Jacksonville

graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in June 1955 and enlisted
in the Marine Corps in October 1955. At the time of his death,
he was stationed at Kaneoke Bay, Hawaii. Survivors include his

Sunday morning September 11, 1960 in the Bay Pines Veterans' Hospital
at Bay Pines, Fla. He was a native of Wayne county, a veteran
of World War I and retired merchant of Odum. At the time of his
death he was living in Lake Wales, Florida. Funeral services were
held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Odum Baptist church with the Rev.

29, died Thursday morning December 29, 1960 at her home near Odum

Emory Lee Westberry Found Dead In Woods Tuesday. A week-long search
for Emory Westberry, 46, of Gardi, ended Tuesday afternoon. He
was found in the cab of his pick-up truck dead from a .22 caliber
(?) shotgun wound. According to Wayne County Sheriff John C. Reddish's
office, two high school youths saw the truck and notified Troy
Fore. Deputy "Nub" Royal said, Fore investigated, found
Westberry and then notified the sheriff's office by phone. Westberry
had disappeared last Wednesday, February 22, 1961 and had been
the object of search by National Guardsmen with jeeps and helicopters
Sunday and Monday. He was found in a wooded area about one and
one-half miles from the Hopkins estate in an area known as the
"Old Knight Place." According to Royal, the road on
which the truck was found was a seldom-used road overgrown with
brush. It was about five miles from Grangerville. A veteran of
World War II, Westberry was a native of Wayne County. W. H. NeSmith,
Wayne County Coroner, said a note was left by Westberry. An inquest
will probably be held Thursday, according to NeSmith.

Mrs. Clary Dies In California. Mrs. W. Tom Clary, a resident of
Jesup for a long period of years, died Monday November 14, 1966
at her home at Yorba Linda, Cal., after a brief illness. Mrs.
Clary was a member of Jesup First Methodist Church. She was a
native of Rabun County. Burial was at Brea, Cal. Survivors include
her husband, a son, W. T. Clary, and three grandchildren, Anne,
Thomas and Ellen. All reside at Yorbo Linda.

Last rites for Vernon Robert Jones, 62, who died Tuesday at his
home, 530 Avenue C, West, in Wahneta, were held Thursday at Wahneta
Church of God with the pastor, the Rev. J. G. Williams, officiating,
Crisp Funeral Home conducted obsequies at the Church of Christ
Cemetery at Eagle Lake.
A native of Jesup, Ga., Mr. Jones moved to this area in 1925.
He retired in 1966 as a welder for the Perkins Manufacturing Co.
at Lake Alfred. He attended the Wahneta Church of God.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Annie T. Jones, Wahneta; two daughters,
Mrs. Grace James, Miami, and Mrs. Thelma Bennett, Tampa; a sister,

Owen E. Clary Former Resident Buried Monday. Owen E. Clary, 61,
died Friday, August 23,1968 suddenly at his home in Ocala, Florida.
He was the son of the late Joshua J. and Abbie Nichols Clary of
Screven. He spent his early life as a resident of Screven and
Wayne County and had been a resident of Ocala for the past 20
years. He was a member of the Screven Masonic Lodge and was one
of the organizers of several unchartered Masonic Lodges on the
Pacific Islands. He served as a "See-Bee" during World
War II and was assigned to the Marines for combat duty. He is
survived by his wife, Myrtle Louns Clary of Ocala; two sisters,
Mrs. H. A. Thornton of Decatur and Mrs. Gertrude C. Ladlow of
Miami; two brothers, William A. Clary of Screven and Andrew J.
Clary of Jacksonville and several nieces and nephews. Funeral
services were held Monday, august 26th at 10 a.m. in the chapel
of Hiers Funeral Home in Ocala.

had resided here 35 years. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lucy Westberry; a daughter, Mrs.

Dr. Joe D. Clary of Lakeland, Florida died Saturday January 10,
1970 in the Lakeland General Hospital after a long illness. The
Wayne County native had been a resident of Lakeland for 14 years.
He was a member of the Lakeland United Methodist Church and the
Lakeland Rotary Club. He was a former professor at the Georgia
Institute of Technology and was retired as the manager of Research
and Development for the W. R. Grace Company of Bartow, Florida.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Kathleen Shedd Clary of Lakeland;

in the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Dublin after an extended
illness. The Wayne County native was a former resident of Fort

of the Florida Legislature. She is survived by her niece, Arjean

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edmund and Claudia Knight

- Verdon Westberry, 67, died June 7, 1998.
He was born in Wayne County and was a retired employee of Walker
LP Gas and Concrete Co. He was the widower of Ernie Westberry.
SURVIVORS: a daughter and son-in-law, Linda S. and Jimmy Strickland
of Waycross; a son, John Silva of Ludowici; his mother, Dellie
W. Westberry of Jesup; a sister, Aline Vaughn of Jesup; three
brothers, Thomas and Avery Westberry, both of Jesup, and Lonnie

Moody, 89, died Feb. 10, 1999 at Bacon County Hospital. She was
a native of Wayne County. She taught school in Wayne County and
was school cafeteria supervisor in Varnville, S.C. She then resided
several years in Fort White, Fla., before moving to Alma 54 years
ago. She was active in community affairs and had operated the
Sewing House. She was a member of Alma Church of God and taught
Sunday school for more than 35 years. SURVIVORS: her husband,
Leonard Burton Moody of Alma; a son, L. Bryson Moody of Alma;
two daughters, Voncile Kight of Springfield and Mariam Williams

He was born in West Palm Beach, Fla., and was a member of Bethel

WESTBERRY- Hazel Reams Westberry, 83, died Thursday, October 28,
1999 at her home in Lamont, Florida. She was a native and longtime
resident of Lamont. She was a retired Jefferson County School
teacher and a member of the Lamont Baptist Church. She graduated
from the Florida State College for Women in May, 1936, and received
her Masters degree from Florida State University in August, 1956.
She taught school for 35 years in Jefferson County and was a past
Worthy Matron, Order of Eastern Star, Perry, Florida. She served
as pianist for 30 years at the Lamont United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one son, Lavaughn Westberry, St. Augustine,
FL; one daughter, Shanna W. Clark, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two brothers,
Albert Reams, Lamont, FL and C. J. Reams, Lamont, FL; three grandchildren
and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday,
October 31, 1999 at 2:00 PM, in the Lamont Baptist Church, Lamont,
Florida. Burial will follow in the Walker Cemetery, Madison County,

He was a native of Bulloch County but lived in Wayne County the
past 50 years. He was a member of New Hope Freewill Baptist Church,
an Army veteran of World War II and a retired railroad construction
consultant.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Vivian Westberry Lanier of Jesup; four sisters,
Claudia Wilkerson Clements of Valdosta, Willa Dean Kiser of Hahira,
Clarice Proctor Mullis of MacClenny, Fla., and Kitty Jean Brannen
of Statesboro; and several nieces and nephews.

-- Auzzie Jay Westberry, 49, died May 15, 2000 at home.
He was a native of Broward County, Fla., and lived in Wayne County
most of his life. He was employed by RWP Services of Jesup and
was an avid gardener.
SURVIVORS: twin daughters, Christy Roberts and Misty Smith, both
of Monticello; his parents, Harry and Mildred Westberry of Odum;
a sister, Harriett Cooper of Jesup; three brothers, Glenn Westberry,
Allen Westberry and Mark Westberry, all of Odum; and several nieces
and nephews.

GRIFFIN -- Dorval R. Westberry died June 8, 2000 at Spalding Regional
Hospital.
He was born in Surrency and was an Army veteran.

Dean (Bud) Westberry, 82, of Odum died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002,
at his residence after an extended illness. The Wayne County native
was a member and deacon of New Hope Free Will Baptist Church,
a member of the Jesup Masonic Lodge No. 112, F.&A.M. and was
maintenance superintendent of the Wayne County Courthouse. He
was a veteran of World War II. Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law,
Ann and Gary Bennett of Lakeland, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law,
Deen and Cheryl Westberry of Jesup; four sisters, Vivian Lanier,
Fronnie Davis, George Reddish, all of Jesup, Alma Rode of Beverly
Hills, Fla; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. (today) Wednesday, Sept.
4, from New Hope Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Horne,
the Rev. Billy Livesay and Gleason Copeland officiating. Interment
will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Calbert
Westberry, Roy Davis, Quinn Collins Jr., Royal Westberry, Duane
Westberry, Lindsay Jones, Earl Purcell and Tommy Sharpe. Honorary

Fred
Vincent Westberry, 51, passed away Dec. 30, 2002 at N. Fulton
Regional Hospital after a short battle with cancer. The Roswell,
Ga., lawyer had fought courageously for his life. His efforts
and contributions on behalf of others who needed legal services
have touched many lives. Outside of the field of law, his passion
was his musical talent. He enjoyed playing most instruments but
was best known for his style on the saxophone. His most recent
band and extended family call themselves “Rats In the Attic.”
Fred was preceded in death by his mother, Inez Westberry, and
is survived by his father, Ernest Westberry of Jesup; his sister,
Karen O’Neal of Oklahoma; brothers Keith and Ernie Westberry
as well as several nieces and nephews. Also, he is survived by
his fiance, Lisa Harkins. A celebration of Fred’s life was
held in Helen on Jan. 4. Thomas Funeral Home of Calhoun, Ga. was
in charge of arrangements.
Bonita Westberry "Bonnie"
Carstens of Gainesville died Friday January 03, 2003 at North
Florida Regional Medical Center. She was 77.
Mrs. Carstens was born in Mayo and came here from Bethesda, Md.,
in 1959.
She was a retired payroll manager at the University of Florida.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a son, Robert H. Carstens III of Melrose; sisters
Pat Fields of Tallahassee, Bernice Edwards and Shirley Cutrer,
both of Perry, and Barbara Jean Blackmon of Sumter, S.C.; four
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Buried in Woodlawn in Perry, Florida.

Mrs. Bernice Edwards, 82, died Jan. 26, 2003, at Marshall Health
and Rehabilitation Center in Perry. A native of Jessup, Ga., she
had lived in Perry most of her life. Before her retirement, she
was employed with the Taylor County Board of Commissioners at
the county personnel director and was a former administrator in
the local food stamp office. Mrs. Edwards was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church of Perry. She was predeceased by her
parents, Howell Westberry and the late former Maybell Dukes; her
husband, R. L. Edwards, Sr.; and a great grandson, Rhett Lee Frisbie.
Survivors include: two sons, Robert L. Edwards, Jr. and Thomas
H. Edwards, both of Tallahassee; three daughters, Julie E. Granger,
Sharon E. Ratliff, both of Tallahassee, and Janet E. Johnston,
of Perry; three sisters, Shirley Cutrer of Perry, Barbara Jean
Blackmon of Sumter, S.C. and Pat Field of Tallahassee; 10 grandchildren;
and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today,
Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. in Joe P. Burns Funeral Home Chapel with interment

Rochell B. Davis, 82, of Jesup died Aug. 15, 2003, in the St.
Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah after an extended illness.
The Wayne County native was a member of Jesup First Baptist Church
and a U.S. Army veteran. He served in the Southwest Pacific during
World War II. He was a retired volunteer fireman, a volunteer
deputy sheriff and a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 112 F&A.M.
He was a past president of the Jesup Shrine Club, where he co-founded
the Jesup Shrine Club Motorcycle Unit. He was also the owner and
operator of the Downtown Service Station for 27 years. He was
the co-owner of Jesup Furniture Outlet and was an avid fisherman.
Survivors are his wife of 55 years, Fronnie Westberry Davis of
Jesup; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Janie Davis of Jesup
and Don and Kim Davis of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; a daughter and
son-in-law, Kim and Ben Evans of Perry; four grandchildren and
spouses, Brant and Ashley Davis of St. Simons Island, Jake and
Jessica Davis of Jesup, Davis Evans of Perry and Lindsey Godfrey
of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; a great-grandchild, Taylor Anne Davis
of St. Simons Island; two brothers, Emory B. Davis of Jesup and

Nina Viola Sloan, 87, of Hortense, passed away Monday afternoon
January 26, 2004 at her residence following an extended illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Potter Sloan, and was
a founding member of the Hortense Church of God of Prophecy and
was well known throughout Southeast Georgia for her love of music
and played the piano in many churches.
A native of Glynn County, she was the daughter of the late M.C.
Jones and Ida Westberry Jones and was an original member of the
gospel group, the “Gospelettes.”
Survivors include three daughters, Betty Townsend, Inez Hearn
and June Faye Lee, all of Hortense; also surviving are three grandchildren,
13 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, from
the Hortense Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Lamar Lee,
Rev. W.C. Beasley and Rev. Matthew McEachern officiating. Burial
followed in the family plot in Hortense Cemetery.

Westberry, 82, of Surrency died Monday, March 29, 2004 in Beverly
Health and Rehabilitation Center in Jesup after an extended illness.
A lifelong resident of Appling County, she was a member of Bethel
United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Nelson Westberry, and her son, Dorval Westberry. Survivors include
a son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Margaret Westberry of Surrency;
a daughter and son-in-law, Genevieve and Clarence Fontenot of
Lake Charles, La.; a daughter-in-law, Jean Westberry of Griffin;
and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral
services were April 1 at Bethel United Methodist Church with the
Rev. Julian Tucker and the Rev. Ralph Devereaux officiating. Interment
followed in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Olvid
Devereaux, Dean Westberry, Royal Westberry, Omen Westberry, Paschol
Pearce, Mark Tomberlin, Jasper Tomberlin and Howard Tomberlin.

Harry T. Westberry, 82, of Odum,
died Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at his residence. The Wayne County
native was a member of Piney Grove Church of God and a retired
builder and farmer. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II.
He was predeceased by a son, A.J. Westberry. Survivors are his
wife of 62 years, Mildred Davis Westberry of Odum; a daughter
and son-in-law, Harriett and Larry Cooper of Jesup; three sons
and daughters-in-law, Allen and Phylis Westberry, Glenn Westberry,
amd Mark Westberry all of Odum, two sisters, Eileen Dent of Odum,
Lawanna Horton of Birmingham, Ala.; nine grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren. Funeral Services were held Friday from the
Rinehart & Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Lord and
Rev. Stanley Todd officiating. Interment was in Pinecrest Memorial
Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Lamar Dent, Bryson Moody, Wyman
Westberry, Jason Cooper, Brian Westberry and Brent Westberry.

Lawanna Westberry Horton, 77,
passed away Oct. 23, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. She
was born Dec. 13, 1926, in Odum to John and Miriam Westberry.
She worked at Oxmoor House Book Division of Southern Progress
Company, from which she retired in 1990. She was a member of First
Baptist Church of Birmingham, where she was active in the Friendship
Sunday school class. She also enjoyed her neighborhood garden
club. The youngest of nine children, she was preceded in death
by her sister Velma Westberry Moody; her six brothers, Bryant
Westberry, Leon Westberry, Gilbert Westberry, Earl Westberry,
John W. Westberry and Harry Westberry; her niece, Voncile Moody
Kight; and her nephews, Bryant Westberry, Bill Westberry and A.J.
Westberry. She has been the wife of Kenneth Bryan Horton for almost
57 years and the mother of Dr. Susan Horton Eiland of Birmingham,
Ala., and Kenneth Roy Horton of Thomasville. She is also survived
by her son-in-law, Dr. C. Morgan Eiland; three grandchildren,
Susanna Horton Eiland of Boston, Mass., Morgan Bryan Eiland of
Birmingham, Ala., and Forrest Cole Horton of Thomasville; her
sister, Eileen Westberry Dent of Odum; and 25 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist
Church in Birmingham, Ala. Burial will take place today (Wednesday)
at 11 a.m. at Piney Grove Cemetery in Odum. Horton requested that

Calbert
J. Westberry, 55, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, of injuries sustained
in an automobile accident. The Wayne County native had lived most
of his life in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. prior to retiring in Odum
four years ago. He was a surveyor and computer analyst with Broward
County City Government, and a U. S. Army veteran and recipient
of the Purple Heart with “Charlie company” of the Vietnam
era. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 221 of Broward County, Fla.
and shriner. He was predeceased by his father, Cecil James Westberry.
Survivors are his mother, Helen K. Westberry of Odum, three brothers,
Durand Henry Westberry and Robert Lee Wesberry, both of Ft. Lauderdale,
Fla., and Clayton Ernest Westberry of Odum; and a niece, Melissa
Ann Westberry of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Funeral services will be
held 11 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday) at New Hope Freewill Baptist
Church with the Rev. Tim Horne officiating. Interment will be
in New Hope Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be: Alvin Westberry,

John James Cutrer Sr., 74, died Jan. 23, 2005
Mr. CUTRER was a native of Foley and a lifelong resident of Perry.
He was the son of the late James Floyd CUTRER and Jennie THOMPSON
Cutrer. A graduate of Florida State University, he was a member
of Southside Baptist Church, Perry Elks Club, Perry Masonic Lodge,
Marzuq Shrine Club, Marzuq Motorcycle Escort, Rambling Renegades
and Seminolde Radio Control Club. He retired after 37 years from
Proctor and Gamble as a manager.
Survivors include: his wife of 52 years, Shirley WESTBERRY Cutrer
of Perry; one son John James Cutrer Jr. of Lake Talquin; two sisters-in-law,
Barbara BLACKMON of Sumter, SC and Pat FIELD of Tallahassee; one
grandson; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Thelma REDDICK of Thomaston, GA.
Funeral services will be held today, January 26, at 2 p.m. at
Southside Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
